Why Did the Milk Man Die Out?

Way back when, if you did not own your own cow, a milkman delivered glass bottles of milk from door to door to the city folk.

At first the milk man drove in a horse drawn wagon that was filled with blocks of ice to keep the milk cold when it was delivered.

When I was about 4 years old my parents bought new Westinghouse refrigerator that plugged in.
We still had milk delivered to our milk box in the 1960's. Some houses had milk shutes, a little door in the side of the house to place the milk and the empty milk bottles. By then the milk man drove motorized refrigerated trucks.

Milk became available in the stores with the invention of the refrigerators units. The milkman was losing business.

Milk bottles went by the wayside to be sold in wax covered cartons. Many of us thought that was a bad idea. I loved my milk bottles that could be reused over and over.

Of course, it was gross whenever a mouse fell in and drowned during the bottling process. Oh yeah, my mom found one deader than a doornail in our milk once.

In the 1980's I still had a milkman, as did all of the elderly people on the block. It was so convenient. When my middle child was 7, she thought the milkman had to have been her father because she was so sure she did not look like anyone in the family. I finally got her she that she belonged to her father and I.

Perhaps, this will be read on Facebook by someone whoo knows my middle child.Yep, pay back time, sweetie. The whole world now knows that you were wrong!

Today there are only few companies that deliver milk door to door. The milkman is still alive and well delivery to the grocery stores and institutions such as school lunch programs.
