Toxic Stone Soup: The Bottled Water Crock

Good clean water is essential to life. We all know that living bodies need to consume water in order to survive, yet Americans seem to think we have to buy water in disposable plastic bottles in order to do our bodies good. In the process we are hurting our enviroment with plastic garbage that will never break down.

Yep, we might make the healtier choice when buying a bottle of water stashed in the same vending machine as the Coke or Pepsi.

Myth: Save gas and carry crystal clear bottles

What a marketing hype! There is nothing pure about those plastic bottles that overflowthe garbage dumps.

We worry about gas guzzling cars, so we walk or bike  carrying along our bottles of crystal clear water that used up 1.5 million barrels of oil to manufacture those darn plastic containers. Not to mention all of the  nickel, ethylbenzene, ethylene oxide and benzene that are released into the air when they manufacture disposable plastic bottles we all love so much to show off our good choices.

Disposable Plastic Water Bottles What a Crock!

In a previous post I wrote,"Someone sold us all a bill of good; a load of crap that will destroy the environment as we know it. "Packaged water in disposable bottles is so-o-o good for you!" Drinking water is essential for the health of the body, but, bottled water is no better than the water out of your faucet."

Don't backwash!

Let's face it, we all backwash leaving bacteria and viral laden saliva swimming in the remaining water inside side those dispoable bottles. Even when using a straw we still backwash.

The warmer the environment that more the invisible spit mulitples. Leave your 1/2 empty or is it half full, water bottle with body fluids from your germy mouth in the hot car and WOW! You have bacteria soup: toxic stone soup.

Re-purpose

I am all for repurposing and I am cheap. I have washed out empty water bottels that are meant for one use only. If you do this stop it!

Those small bottle neck that you spit through without knowing it get germs from your dirty hands that grab the bottle off the floor with food in your mouth. E-e-w-w-w! Crawling with germs. Short story: rinsing out a bottle won't cut it.

  • Use a stainless steele thermos or a re-suable bottle that can be wash and sanitized well.

Sunlight on plastic bottles is bad!

Decades ago I heard on the news to not leave your delivered water, that comes in 5 gallons jugs, in the sunlight as the plastic chemicals end up in the water. I have been researching this believing this is still true. However, I found this statement on Food Safety Magazine written by Jill Culora and I quote: "Misleading statements about plastic containers are all too commonly repeated, not only on the Internet, but within our communities...He concludes, “There is currently no indication that contaminants from migration or from the water source are a problem in bottled water. Plastic food and beverage containers meet or exceed all FDA requirements.”  unquote.

According to the post titled:

The Safety of Beverages in Plastic Bottles

The type of plastic used now days for food and water is much different from your plastic lawn furniture which does suffer in the sunlight. (BPA and Polycarbonate plastic)

If you ask me, I am still a skeptic about plastic chemicals in our bottled water.

Some claims have been made about freezing bottled water releases digoxin into the water. But according to Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health  this is what they call "and urban legend".

I would call it toxic stone soup. With good, bad and toxic information all thrown into one pot it is difficult to know for sure what is truth or dare I belive something else.

Bottle water is not better

Contrary to what the beverage industry wants us all to buy into, purchasing bottle water is a waste of our financail resources if we consume it on a regular basis. Those bottles of water are mostly from tap water like you can get for a fraction of a fraction of the cost out of your kitchen sink. You supposedly know what your local water system has added to it.

I have not run any idependant testing.  I am not a scientist. Do I know who is telling the whole truth and nothing but the truth?

  • No, I do not know the honest answers to all of the questions about bottled water.
  • Yes, I will continue to store up emergency sealed water for emergencies.
  • No, I will not buy dozens of individual disposable bottles of water to drink daily.
  • I will purchase bottled water only in an emergency if no other source of water is available.
Do I believe all of the water in the US is safe to drink?
  • Heck , no.
There is alot more I will write about water in another post. My best recommendation is to research your local water source avoiding the single use disposable bottles of water.
